Still no baby…

August 22nd, 2010

Looks like I might be going to work again tomorrow after all. Hmmmm. Yay?

Swaddling the monkey

August 17th, 2010

We decided to practice swaddling the baby by using this stuffed monkey as a test subjecct. He seemed pretty happy about it. Let’s hope it’s as easy with a screaming wiggling miranda…

Ok, who's next?

The final stretch.

35 weeks old

We just hit the final stretch. Miranda is due to be born in less than two weeks now, which means she could be deciding to come out anytime. Christina has been telling her daily that she isn’t allowed to come early.

Here’s a photo of the latest sonogram. Creepy skull shadow. Awesome.

Going to work for Google

August 3rd, 2010

I just accepted a job offer from Google. (yay!). I will be starting there mid-September. That gives me about 3 weeks of time-off to get the hang of the whole Miranda thing. I guess I’m in for a lot of changes in the near future. Ready for any of it? I guess we’ll see…

Looking good at the AUSA Army Ball

Pay no attention to my crooked bowtie.

Pay no attention to my crooked bowtie.

The ball was a good time. On a sad note, this years Ms America really couldn’t sing. She butchered the national anthem, then came back later for another round with a Maryah Carrey song. Double ouch. Well, at least the second song might have been worth butchering…

Ode to my Shitbox

May 31st, 2010

So, we got this really awesome car in Hawai’i, and I really want to rant about it some more, so here goes…

The service from Avis wasn’t the problem. They treated us well, the price was very reasonable, I skipped the peon line, and they gave me a shiny clean car with only 13k miles on it and no scratches. In fact it could easily be the last Pontiac ever made.

The problem was that the car was a Pontiac Vibe. It had serious trouble accelerating whenever we had more than 2 grownups in the car, and barely made it up the volcano road. We thought someone was going to have to get out and push. The brakes were dangerously weak too, I almost missed the first left turn I tried to make because the car was not slowing down like I expected. There was also this painful thing poking me in the back in the drivers seat, which I suspect was a lojack device because the other seats were fine. Add to that a tendency to drift left, bizarrely located dashboard controls, and weird separators that made it hard to see parts of the dash if you were tall, yet allowed some of the lights to reflect onto the windshield at night anyway, and you’ve got a Pontiac Shitbox.

But hey, at least it looked cute, fit all our stuff and handled decently in the turns. We did enjoy making fun of the little spoiler and giving it that endearing nickname, too.

Maybe I’ve been driving luxury cars and working at Edmunds.com too long, and now I’m a picky car snob. I did consider going back to Avis and getting a different car, being an annoying customer, and ending up with a barely-better American-made piece of junk with a special downsized-for-rentals engine, and wasting an hour or two of my time in the process. Or we could take that time and go to the beach and swim with the turtles some more.

Turtles won. :)

(Yes, we are glad Pontiac went out of business)

(And yes, I know the Vibe is really a Toyota with a Pontiac logo on it. I don’t care.)

Back from Hawai’i

May 29th, 2010

Totally sick things about our Hawai’i trip:

Not-so-sick things about our Hawai’i trip:

  • Sunburns
  • The Pontiac Shitbox
  • Morning workout injuries
  • Getting sick
  • Hilo
  • Getting on the wrong boat
  • Packing the camera with only a defective memory card
  • Forgetting the HDMI cable in Hawaii

Overall: totally cool trip.

More turtles!

May 24th, 2010

2 days later, and we’re up to 3 turtles. And also some serious sunburns. All worth it though.
